I am preparing a paper on street names in the City of North Vancouver, B.C.
Canada. A large block of property came into the possession of one Arthur
Pemberton Heywood-Lonsdale of Shavington Hall, Shropshire about the time
he died in 1897.
The property became part of the estate and was sold off over about 40 years. This property development
occurred at about the time the City was incorporated. The estate, under
the name Lonsdale Estates was managed by a James Pemberton Fell, a nephew
of the deceased Heywood-Lonsdale.
He named many of the streets. One of the streets was named Gladstone. One of the
executors of Arthur Pemberton Heywood-Lonsdale's will was a Robert
Gladstone of Liverpool. I am lead to believe he was a businessman and that
was a relative of the politician, cum Prime Minister, William Gladstone.
Can you provide me with any information on Robert Gladstone.
I do not know his biographical data. Arthur Pemberton Heywood-Lonsdale's
will was drawn up in 1888.
If you have any information regarding this query please
email me.
I think my great-grandfather, William Condell, worked (possibly as a clerk) for a
"ship's chandler" named “James Gore King” at his business at 8 Goree, Liverpool,
some time between 1818 and 1849. I believe it was at Queen's Dock.
What kind of a
business is "ship's chandler"? And does the Goree still exist, either in its original
form or restored.
I'm very interested in Liverpool and its docks and the people who
worked there in the early 19th century, but it's hard to get info in Canada, even
on the Internet. Could anybody be of help?
All the best, Joyce

I'm not sure it's of interest to anybody, but in researching my family history I
have come across a number of Liverpool connections with sugar in Barbados and
(presumably) slavery.
I hold a letter (the original) dated 1803 (possibly 1808) from the sister in
law of my gggg grandfather who - though originally from Liverpool - was
apprenticed to Mr. Gillow of (later) Wring and Gillow repute.
The letter tells of an announcement in the Liverpool papers of the death of
my ancestor’s uncle and the estate in Barbados valued (then) at £30000.
Obviously, if it were possible to track that announcement down it would
present a pretty graphic illustration of life and Liverpool connection in the
18th-19th century. Unfortunately we have never been able to find the
announcement referred to in the letter!

Can you help me out. My name is Allen White, 4605 Porter St. Fremont,
Calif. 94538, My gr great grandfather lived in Birmingham and in 1836
was transported to Van Demon's Island, (January 1836) and landed in May.
He was put on the Elphinstone. It is reported that he could read and
write and I have a record of his landing there. Now I'm trying to find
some information in Liverpool if it is possible, maybe at the Maritime
Museum, or anyplace who can help me get some background on the court
proceedings, arrest methods, jails etc. Did most of the passengers from
England go through Liverpool? What is the e-mail address to the Maritime
Museum etc? Can you supply me with any info about convicts and their way
of life etc. My John White born in September 1809 went to Tasmania and
his wife remarried and emigrated to USA.
Thank you. Allen White
